Portman’s America & Other Speculations

Combining the talents of an architect, artist and developer, John Portman was able to embark on a series of large-scale building projects —megastructures—that radically redefined the relationship of architecture to the city and its citizens. Iwan Baan’s new photographs of Portman’s work, commissioned for the recent book Portman’s America (edited by GSD dean Mohsen Mostafavi), document Portman’s work in bare, candid fashion. This exhibition presents a curated selection of these photographs, offering a complex and nuanced reading of both John Portman the architect and his architecture.
