Chris Reed (adjunct associate professor of landscape architecture) just returned from Asia, where he was a keynote speaker at the 2012 Forum on Resilient Cities, hosted by Kongjian Yu (design critic in landscape architecture and DDesS 95) at the Peking University College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture in Beijing. His talk focused on his work to make cities resilient, both relative to climate change (incorporating mitigation strategies for storm surge and sea level rise, for instance), and as durable and robust social and cultural centers.
While he was in that part of the world, he also delivered a lecture titled “Landscape and City-Making” to the Landscape Architecture Program at Seoul National University in Seoul, South Korea.
His topics couldn’t be more timely, as cities across the world are facing more extreme weather events and feeling the pressure of rapid urbanization and population growth. Last week’s Hurricane Sandy certainly drove the point home to beleaguered residents of the northeast U.S.
