Jerold Kayden (professor of urban planning and design) is happy to shake things up, especially if the result is more livable and accessible cities. He is on Next City’s 2012 Disruption Index, a list of “77 people, places and ideas that have changed cities this year.”
Kayden has earned his place on the list by exposing privately owned public spaces in the 2000 publication Privately Owned Public Space: The New York City Experience and founding Advocates for Privately Owned Public Space to improve use and accessibility. Not only is he a recognized expert on property rights, smart growth, historic preservation, land reform and market-based regulation, he has been honored in the past as GSD Teacher of the Year.
