Somayeh Chitchian presents at Northeastern University

Somayeh Chitchian (MDesS ‘13) will be presenting at the Northeastern University Annual Graduate Student Conference in World History “Migration, Mobility, and Movements: Crossing Borders in World History” on March 17.
Her research “Other[ed] City: (Re)Presentation of Muslim Identities in Contemporary Urban West” uses spatial analysis to investigate how – in a constant process of in/exclusion – changing urban neighborhoods become the locus of representational conflicts, especially where the presence of the other group is concerned. Through their activities and the way they inhabit social space, these immigrant communities express their social agency by challenging and in some instances subverting the official use of social spaces. Understanding this process of transformation, meaning-making, and identity formation is essential to the study and investigation of social change.
