Aliki Economides and Marrikka Trotter, both in the GSD PhD program, presented papers on ornament in contemporary global architecture at [email protected] 2013 (International Doctoral Encounters in Architecture at the Université de Montréal). Economides, along with Jean-Pierre Chupin, professor at the Université de Montréal and Co-Director of the Laboratoire en Étude de l’Architecture, co-organized this first of a biannual series of symposia. The papers will be included in a publication due out next year.
[email protected] 2013 brought together doctoral students from universities in Brazil, Canada, France, Switzerland, U.K. and U.S.A. to share research. The theme was, “Ornament, Algorithms and Analogies: between cognitive and technological operations in architecture.” Trotter discussed “Ornament, Infrastructure and Risk: The Architectural Aftermath of Lisbon, 1755,” and Economides brought listeners up to date on “The Current State and Stakes of the Question of Ornament.” Look for publication of the conference papers, co-edited by Chupin and Economides, in 2014 as part of the new book series Potential Architecture Books.
