GSD hosts design workshop in Japan

The two week workshop “Tokyo: A Synthesis of Scales,” led by Felipe Correa (associate professor of urban design) and supported by the office of Dean Mostafavi, Tokyo based alumni and the Mori Corporation, took place from June 24 to July 4th at Toranomon Hills.

The event explored Tokyo as a unique urban laboratory to examine architecture across a broad range of urban scales. It brought together students and faculty from architecture schools in the region–including Hosei University, Meiji University, University of Tokyo and Waseda University–for a short yet intense design exercise. The focus was on rethinking the role of large-scale mobility infrastructure as a driver for much more ambitious urban projects. Students, working in groups across schools, envisioned 6 experimental urban strategies that emerged at the intersection of architecture, mobility infrastructure and multiple scales of design.

The projects where exhibited at a gallery reception on July 4th that brought together over 60 alumni and friends of the GSD in Japan. The work will also be exhibited in the participating schools.
