GSD students, professors awarded 2015 Graham Foundation grants

Four members of the GSD community are among this year’s recipients of individual grants from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts. In its first major grant announcement of the year, the Graham Foundation awarded over $490,000 to support projects that “engage original ideas in architecture.” The 63 awarded projects were selected from a pool of 600 submissions.

“These diverse projects advance new scholarship in the field of architecture, fuel creative experimentation and critical dialogue, and expand opportunities for public engagement with architecture and its role in contemporary society,” the foundation said in a statement.

GSD awardees and their projects are:

–       Silvia Benedito (MAUD ’04), assistant professor of landscape architecture, for forthcoming book Atmosphere Anatomies: On Design, Weather and Sensation (Lars Müller Publishers, 2016), with photographer and coauthor Iwan Baan. Atmosphere Anatomies investigates the relationships between landscape architecture, urbanism, and atmosphere as design media for sensory and physiological well-being. Last year, Benedito was awarded the MacDowell Colony Fellowship and worked on Atmosphere Anatomies during that fellowship last summer.

–       Daniel Ibañez (MDes ’12 and DDes candidate) and Charles Waldheim, John E. Irving Professor of Landscape Architecture and chair of the department of landscape architecture, for the publication Third Coast Atlas: Prelude to a Plan of The Great Lakes Region (Actar Publishers, 2015), with coauthors Clare Lyster and Mason White. Third Coast Atlas presents analysis of the unique landscapes, hydrology, infrastructure, urban form, and ecologies of the Great Lakes region.

–       Marrikka Trotter (PhD candidate) for the book Architecture is All Over (Actar Publishers, 2015), with coeditor Esther Choi. Architecture is All Over gathers discourse on the spatial possibilities offered by relationships between physical infrastructure and immaterial forces.

The Graham Foundation will announce grants to organizations, as well as winners of the 2015 Carter Manny Award, later this year.
