Each year, the Harvard Graduate School of Design’s Community Service Fellowship Program (CSFP) provides opportunities for GSD students to apply the skills they have developed in their academic programs through direct involvement with projects that address public needs and community concerns at the local, national, and international level.
CSFP opportunities fall into five categories. Greater Boston Area Community Service Fellowships, the original program, focuses on providing funding for students to work in the greater Boston area. In the past, students receiving this fellowship have worked with organizations such as the Boston Redevelopment Authority and the Boston office of the Environmental Protection Agency.
Beginning last summer, the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies (JCHS) began supporting additional community service fellowships for students obtaining internships or other volunteer opportunities with organizations whose work focuses on housing, the built environment, or community development through the Joint Center for Housing Studies Community Service Fellowship.
Other programs include the Doebele Community Service Fellowship, conceived in 2010 on the occasion of the Loeb Fellowship’s 40th anniversary and offering a stipend to bring design and planning skills to a non-profit or government organization. International Travel Community Service Fellowships support GSD students in travelling overseas to work in nonprofit or government settings, while the Harvard Club of New York Fellowship supports a student working in New York.
