A recent publication by Charles Waldheim, the John E. Irving Professor of Landscape Architecture, has been shortlisted for the 2017 National Urban Design Book Award, an annual competition organized by the UK’s Urban Design Group.

waldWaldheim’s book Landscape as Urbanism: A General Theory presents the case for looking at the city through landscape. The book is praised as “timely and fascinating” by Jonathan Kendall, a judge for the National Urban Design Awards, who continues: “A compelling overview of internationally-recognised urbanists, landscape architects and architects whose practices share a common underpinning in their relationship to nature and ecological systems in the broadest sense.”

The National Urban Design Awards celebrate the best in urban design practice including writers, students, publishers, and others in the industry. The 2017 winners will be announced at a ceremony in London on March 2, 2017.

In addition to teaching at the GSD and directing the GSD’s Office for Urbanization, Waldheim is a prolific speaker and author. Aside Landscape as Urbanism, two of his recent titles are Cartographic Grounds: Projecting the Landscape Imaginary (Princeton Architectural Press, 2016, with co-author Jill Desimini, assistant professor of landscape architecture), and Airport Landscape: Urban Ecologies in the Aerial Age (Harvard GSD, 2016, with Sonja Dümpelmann, associate professor of landscape architecture), the latter of which is part of the GSD’s Harvard Design Studies series.
