Student Profile: William Baumgardner (MLA ’18)

William Baumgardner (MLA ’18) talks about his Community Service Fellowship in Albania, traveling to Bangladesh with Marina Tabassum’s studio, and the impact of the GSD’s alumni network on the student experience. In Albania William got first hand experience that enabled him to see his role as a designer through a new lens of political structures. Ultimately his Fellowship influenced him to pursue a thesis into post-communist cities in the Balkans, and how they have emerged at different rates. In Marina Tabassum’s Option Studio, William along with his peers designed cost efficient structures to store seeds to improve community resilience following a crop failure event. While attending the National ASLA Conference William was taken by the passion and camaraderie of the distinguished professionals in attendance and their interest in the work and studies of the Student ASLA members.
