Analysis and Design of Building Structures II

A continuation of GSD 6201, this course provides students with an enhanced understanding of structural analysis and engineering design concepts. Students learn the fundamentals of the structural engineering design of components (trusses, arches, cables, shells, plates, and statically indeterminate beams and frames) and engineered systems (funicular systems, bridge design, high rise building design, sculptural installations, etc.) using a myriad of construction materials (structural steel, reinforced concrete, pre-stressed concrete, structural glass, etc.). The course relies heavily upon case studies of historic and recently completed projects throughout the world to demonstrate first principles of engineering design and construction. In the process, students develop an understanding for the collaborative design process necessary among engineering and architectural design professionals in the pursuit of real-world design applications.Prerequisites: GSD 6201
