Instructor: Clemens Finkelstein, MDS 2017
Anthony Morey, MDS 2017
Max Enrollment: 15
Date/Time: Jan 5, 7, 8, 11, 13, 15/10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Location: TBD
Description: Through artistic practices, the seminar will explore the built environment, objects and experience by way of translation/transformation from the visual to the visceral and back: imploring architecture to reveal itself through sound.
Structures in architecture have historically and theoretically been viewed in relation to musical terminology and ideals (i.e. harmony, genre, arrangement) though essentially depending on the visual apparatus to convey sensory data in order to construct a spatial experience.
Documentaries on Dance Music and Techno-Culture, analyzing the performative aspect of generating and experiencing space, will be paired with Spotify-Playlists providing the participants of the seminar with tools to immerse themselves fully in the matter –– through sound and image.
Morphing architectural structures, iconographic visuals and the sound of the contemporary coded world with historical and cultural tendencies, the seminar will delve into the exploration of different themes as score of de/tuned mapping: composition, graphic, urban fabric, culture, remix, materiality, affect, synesthesia and memory.
Through an experimental representational approach, the seminar will produce an audiovisual Online Research Diary along with inclusion into a newly founded independent academic journal called MASKS, created by the History and Philosophy Concentration in MDes at the GSD.
