Environmental Technologies in Buildings

This course examines the fundamental scientific principles underlying the thermal, luminous, and acoustic behaviors in buildings, and introduces students to the existing technologies for creating and controlling the interior environment. The focus is on phenomenological behaviors, and case studies will be used to explore the role and limitations of envelope design for mitigating these behaviors, as well as to demonstrate the historical development of environmental systems. Current trends in environmental design, including indoor air quality concerns and computational modeling, will be highlighted. The course will also provide an overview of the basic building services of plumbing and electricity. Prerequisites: GSD 6101, or equivalent.
