Description:
This training session discusses strategies for safeguarding housing prosperity for all, with a particular emphasis on speed and scale, in order to respond better to rapid urbanization. The goal is to highlight a set of tools that aid in preventing new slum formation and, ultimately, counter growing inequalities and socioeconomic and political exclusion in cities. To achieve this, the session’s focus is on (i) designing lowest cost housing and (ii) providing housing finance with characteristics that are tailor-made to the needs of the poorest of the poor. Thereby, the tools taught promote housing solutions that are affordable to the poor and ultra-poor as well—usually through an incremental self-help approach, instead of the large-scale provision of public housing that, with few exceptions, has proved as unaffordable for both governments and the urban poor in low-income countries.
