Media as Method
Today, the models of thought and levels of cognition that underlie the tools and technologies we use still on a daily basis, and over long periods of time, remain fundamentally misunderstood or overlooked. From the measures and materials to the techniques and technologies upon which we preconceive ideas, there is an underlying imperative more than ever for reconsidering the models of research that precondition our motivations in design. The course thus serves as an introduction and advanced inquiry into research methods, means and media. With attention to media and documentation, the course looks at different representational methodologies associated with contemporary projects to establish advanced modes of research through representation. From the basics of writing to the advancements of publishing to the complexities of making, the course aims to encourage the formulation of contemporary, experimental and risky projects where design opens new, an unprecedented possibilities of collaboration and practice. Documentation will therefore play an important role in the course in order to extend longevity of research, build impact and grow public audiences over time. Through the identification of modes and models of research that are fundamentally distinct of, yet remain aware of scientific approaches or artistic practices, the course aims to establish clear positions on pressing topics and big questions of enduring, cultural relevance. The course will focus on a series of case study projects and precedents of successful design research that bring together new media, communications, public interactivity, while discussing discerning forms of presentation for multiple venues and publics. This course is an advanced offering from the MDes Program and is strongly encouraged for all postgraduate students in the MDes Program, as well as students in other programs engaged in questions of design research.
