Sao Paulo, 4 Operations

This course has an irregular schedule. Please see below. Two current questions for architecture:1. lots of resources2. lack of meaningSao Paulo: 4 operationsSITEThe site is Sao Paulo downtown. It is placed in both the historical city and the new downtown. The area is made by hundreds of buildings, more than one thousand of lifts and hundreds of thousands people. Besides, five bridges, railways, subways, four subway stations and four bus terminal stations. That place is the core of a 20 million people city. The introduction to Sao Paulo context will be done by changing approaches, like if we were changing our point of view to look to the same object:-Approach 1: looking through the eyes of an outskirt boy-Approach 2: geography and history-Approach 3: mechanical devices-Approach 4: the horizontal plane [continuity] and the vertical axes [discontinuity]Like if it were possible, an exploratory walking [approach 5] through Sao Paulo downtown is a way to bring our view closer to the life of people in the city, a way to realize the cultural meaning of the city.Design StrategyThe 4 operations strategy highlight\’s four existing situations in the relationship between buildings and topography [lower and upper level, or cities] in downtown Sao Paulo, as diagrammatically shown in the section below. The 4 operations are taken as four actions, verbs, according to the following: 1. To view, or to unblock the view from the rim over the lower level, mostly towards East.2. To transfer, or to move from lower to upper city or vice versa3. To infiltrate, when the lower city goes under the upper city territory4. To invade, when the upper city goes over the lower city territoryThe goal is to design a building as a device to produce one or several of these operations. The 4 operations are taken as four poetic images, it means, like a way to load of meanings our design proposals. Meanings are our criteria to properly select the resources. STUDIOThere are three specific sites, each student will select one of them to spot his own proposal. Our schedule will be divided in three modules.first module 01/29 > 02/28 specific site study [shared activity] building model of the specific site [shared activity] add individual and new approaches to the object [site, theme, program] exploratory drawing [individual proposal]second module03/04 > 03/19 [midterm review] production of the presentation for midterm review [individual activity] notice that more then a design proposal this presentation means your plan of individual working for the third and final module third module04/01 > 05/05 dedicated to the development of each one individual proposalSCHEDULEJanuary — Tue 29, Wed 30, Thur 31 February — Tue 12, Wed 13, Thur 14 Tue 26, Wed 27, Thur 28 March — Tue 4, Wed 5, Thur 6 Tue 18, Wed 19, Thur 20 April — Tue 1, Wed 2, Thur 3 Tue 15 ,Wed 16, Thur 17 Tue 29, Wed 30 May — Thur 1 Tue 6, Wed 7, Thur 8
