Sculpting in Motion
Computer Graphics have opened up unprecedented ways of form making and animation. This unfolding new universe of visual stimuli that is based on complex geometry and simulations has been instrumentalized for movies as well as architectural design, for computer games as well as TV advertisements. Rarely, though, is digital design seen as a discipline in its own right, with its own rules, its own logic. This course attempts just that: to lay down a comprehensive theoretical framework for the design of digital space and form. Topics include the perceptual logic of cause and effect, slowness, scale, materiality and framing. Based on the collaborative working method of the class, the course also considers issues of creativity and invention in the digital realm, where the simple sharing and exchanging of ongoing work becomes as much a factor in the individual design as the procedural and algorithmic dynamics of the software tools.
