“Two” Investigations in Residential Design

This studio explores design at the residential scale through sites located in Manhattan, New York and Sonoma, California. The class will address the form-making capabilities of design to conceptualize and shape contemporary outdoor/indoor living spaces in two differing landscapes- a dense urban context in Manhattan and a rural environment in Northern California. Students should note that this is an experimental design studio using sites owned by the Instructor for which there are already completed proposals either constructed or in process. The work of the studio will therefore use the sites as a starting point to expose students to the evolution of rigorous conceptual designs and to the complexities and pragmatic material concerns of residential design. The studio will have as its primary focus the resolution of outdoor spaces and disposition of architectural elements and is intended for landscape architects, however architects are encouraged to register for the studio if they intend to work within the medium of landscape architecture.Field trips will be held to both sites.
