Professor Anita Berrizbeitia participated in Writing Landscape: Criticism Now, a symposium sponsored by UPSTATE: A Center for Design, Research, and Real Estate at Syracuse University School of Architecture. The symposium explored the role of criticism in the design, reception, and dissemination of landscape in contemporary culture.
Cloud Terrace, a new temporary installation by landscape artists Andy Cao (LF '11) and Xavier Perrot, recently opened at Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, D.C. Clouds sculpted from chicken wire dangle 10,000 loaned Swarovski crystals creating the effect of gathered raindrops over the property's Arbor Terrace. John Beardsley, Adjunct Professor of Landscape Architecture at the GSD and Director of Landscape Studies at Dumbarton Oaks, says temporary installations “breathe new life into these landscapes,” which are “living works” no matter how historic. The commission developed from Cao's visit to the institute as a Loeb fellow in 2011.
Professor in Residence in Art, Design, and the Public Domain Krzysztof Wodiczko, in collaboration with Julian Bonder (MDesS '96), has recently completed construction of the Memorial to the Abolition of Slavery in Nantes, France.
Dwayne Oyler (MArch '01) and Jenny Wu (MArch '01) of Oyler Wu Collaborative were honored by Architectural League with an Emerging Voices Award alongside fellow alumni from SsD. The two firms will speak at tonight's lecture at the Cooper Union in Rose Auditorium, the third evening of the 30th annual Emerging Voices lecture series.
Aloysha Verzhbinsky (MArch '90) has been promoted to partner at Tom Eliot Fisch Architects in San Francisco. With the firm since 2001, Verzhbinsky has more than 20 years of experience in the design and construction of major institutional and public works projects, including hospitals, libraries, recreational facilities, and commercial buildings. His projects have appeared inArchitect, Architecture, and Progressive Architecture and received design awards from the AIA California Council and the San Francisco, New York, and Boston Chapters of AIA.
Karolina Kawiaka (MArch '94) has been named a winner in the National Ideas Competition for the Washington Monument grounds. Her design, "The People's Forum," is currently on display at the National Building Museum and will be included in an upcoming show at the Virginia Center for Architecture. Chris Reed (AB '91), Adjunct Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture and Founding Principal of Stoss Landscape Urbanism, will present a keynote lecture entitled "Landscape and City-Making" at the annual LAbash conference on Friday March 16 in Miami.
The Urban Land Institute/Gerald D. Hines Student Urban Design Competition challenges multidisciplinary student teams to create a comprehensive development program for a real, large-scale site. This year's student entries numbered 139 between 64 schools and proposed a long-term vision for creating a distinct identity for a new downtown Houston district. Two teams of GSD students were recognized in the tenth annual competition, one with an honorable mention for superior site planning, and the other, a joint team with the University of Colorado, was selected as one of four finalists.

Kenneth Luker, MArch ’96, AIA, LEED® AP--Kenneth joined The Freelon Group in 2006 as a Senior Project Designer and became an Associate Principal in 200, and Principal in 2012. His award-winning design career spans a variety of architectural project types with a particular emphasis on college/university design, cultural institutions, and public architecture. He is currently working as Senior Designer on NCSU Gregg Museum (Raleigh, NC) and National Center for Civil and Human Rights (Atlanta, GA). Kenneth received his Master of Architecture degree from Harvard University and his Bachelor of Environmental Design in Architecture from Texas A&M University.
