GSD students look to the future of spatial practices

GSD students will display the wide range of the school's research when Penn State holds its 1st "Nature of Spatial Practices" conference this Friday. The conference will examine how spatial practice, education and political discourse are responding to recent changes in technology, mobility and socio-cultural patterns.

The mapped terrain: GSD exhibit travels to Places journal

“Cartographic Grounds: Projecting the Landscape Imaginary” lives on in Places with an essay by Jill Desimini (assistant professor of landscape architecture). The exhibit, which ran through December 19 at the GSD, looks back at the historical roots of mapmaking and forward to anticipate the potential of new technologies. The images now in the Places gallery are descriptive, ingenious and beautiful.

Chris Reed (adjunct associate professor of landscape architecture) and Eric Höweler (assistant professor of architecture) are making news again. Reed’s firm Stoss Landscape Urbanism with partners Höweler + Yoon were just short-listed for the Movement on Main design competition in Syracuse, NY.

GSD faculty and Loeb Fellows pitch in for Detroit

Loeb fellows and GSD faculty are applying their talents to the challenges of revitalizing Detroit in the Detroit Works Project. Toni Griffin (LF 1998 and adjunct associate professor of urban planning) led the Detroit Works’ technical team and Dan Pitera (LF 2005 and associate professor of architecture), director of Detroit Collaborative Design Center, oversaw community outreach. Chris Reed’s (adjunct associate professor of landscape architecture) firm Stoss Landscape Urbanism contributed to landscape, ecology and open space planning. Sinking Gardens: Alan Waxman and Nikola Bojic connect past to future in Hangzhou

“Sinking Gardens,” by Nikola Bojic (MDesS 13) and Alan Waxman (MLA 14), was installed in XiXi National Wetland Park in Hangzhou for the 2012 West Lake International Sculpture Exhibition. The work connects the history of families who lived for generations in XiXi with the contemporary building boom, and lays claim to public space for the future of China.
