Bauhaus and the City
Master in Design Studies Colloquium celebrates 100 years of urban pedagogy

Bauhaus and the City discusses the role of teaching urbanism across 100 years of design education at the Bauhaus. Urban pedagogy emerging from Modernism is often associated in contexts centered on Chicago or other forms found in American urban design models. This Design Studies colloquium gathers leading scholars to reflect on the impact in which the Bauhaus directly shaped urban design education, including discussions focusing on key figures such as architect and urban planner, Ludwig Hilberseimer and the second director of the Bauhaus school, Hannes Meyer. The event is a celebration of the Bauhaus centennial and surveys the status of urbanism, modernity, and design theory today. Topics addressed include the emergence of urbanism and urban pedagogy from within the founding of the Bauhaus School; historical episodes and concepts from Bauhaus urban pedagogy often over looked; the impact of urban design and modernity in design discourse across 100 years; and the contemporary status of urbanism in the modernist project.
