Center for Middle Eastern Studies: Tunisian Political Cartoonist _Z_: Drawing the Tunisian Revolution

Heavily involved in the opposition against Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali’s autocratic rule, _Z_’s satirical cartoons and articles made him one of the most wanted targets of Tunisia’s secret services. He has remained anonymous as he continues denouncing the government’s antidemocratic practices, and his influence on Tunisia’s public opinion remains significant.

In his first public appearance, _Z_ will give a “draw-as-you-speak”-style lecture while explaining the world of his cartoons. How does he draw Tunis? Islamists? Ben Ali’s family? What does this mean in the context of Tunisian politics?
