Exhibition Opening for “Transformable Design Methods: Research From The Seminar led by Chuck Hoberman”

Architects have long imagined a fundamentally dynamic built environment. But while transformable structures are part of the lexicon of architectural possibilities—portable buildings, retractable coverings, kinetic façades, spaces that morph—architectural design remains focused on objects that are essentially static. How can we understand transformation as a design parameter that can be shaped, crafted, and optimized? Through graphic and video content this exhibit addresses “Transformation in Architecture” as a topic, including deployable and transformable design considerations. Larger scale transformable artifacts produced by the students from the fall semester are featured, as well as graphic and video content. Chuck Hoberman is the 2012–2013 Rouse Visitng Artist In Residence.
