GreeceGSD: Buerger Katsota Architects lecture

This lecture by Stephan Buerger and Demetra Katsota will present recent work of buerger katsota architects. Established in 2005 with offices in Athens and Vienna, buerger katsota architects combine practice, academic research and teaching as well as community pursuits. The practice has designed and build houses, public buildings and spaces in Greece, Austria and the Near East. Their ‘PXAthens’ urban research study lead to the realization of an innovative network of prototypical communal spaces for play. Their work is interpretive and pragmatic, paying particular attention to reference, spatiality, material expression and construction.

buerger katsota architects’ work has been widely published and exhibited in Europe and beyond. Notably, in 2014 and 2012, the practice participated in the Architecture Biennales of Venice. The practice has received several awards and honours. In 2015 and 2013 they were twice nominated for the Mies van den Rohe Award European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture. They are recipients of the ‘Public and Common Use’ Award 2013 of the Hellenic Institute of Architecture and of the ‘Architecture Abroad’ Award 2010 of the Union of Greek Architects, the two most prestigious architecture awards in Greece.

Between 2006-2011 Stephan Buerger and Demetra Katsota in collaboration with Professor Georgios A. Panetsos established in Athens a platform of architectural discourse, colloquy and dialogue, through the launching and editorial of ‘ΔΟΜΕΣ’ International Review of Architecture. The effort includes a total of 59 issues of the Review, 3 International Competitions, 2 Architecture Yearbooks, 5 exhibitions and yearly ‘ΔΟΜΕΣ’ Architecture Awards.
