PHD Book Talks with Timothy Hyde, Matthew Lasner, and Amanda Reeser Lawrence

Professors Hyde, Lasner, and Lawrence completed their PhDs in Architecture at Harvard in 2007. They will be discussing books they recently published based on their dissertation work.
Hyde is associate professor of architecture at the GSD, where he teaches courses in history and theory. He received his BA from Yale and MArch from Princeton. His research focuses on modern architecture and culture, and his writings range from a précis of the work of John Johansen, to an explication of Reyner Banham’s concept of the gizmo, to an investigation of the significance of anonymity in architecture discourse. He is a founding member of the Aggregate Architectural History Collaborative and is one of the editors of the first Aggregate book, Governing by Design.
Lasner is assistant professor of urban studies and planning at Hunter College, where he teaches courses on U.S. and global urbanism, housing, and the built environment. He earned his BA from Columbia and a master’s in urban studies from the London School of Economics. His research interests include the history and theory of modern urbanism, vernacular architecture, and metropolitan form, with particular emphasis on the relationship between the design professions, socio-economic change, and systems of spatial production (the market and the state).
Lawrence is assistant professor of architecture at Northeastern University. She received a BA Summa Cum Laude from Princeton and a MArch from Columbia. Lawrence is a founding co-editor of the award- winning journal, PRAXIS, the only non-commercial architectural publication of contemporary American architecture. Lawrence’s research focuses on a close reading of architectural form—both contemporary and historical—with a particular interest in theorizing the role of influence.
