Jenny French is an Assistant Professor in Practice of Architecture at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design and a founding partner of French 2D.
With her partner Anda French, Jenny co-founded French 2D, an architecture studio based in Boston, in 2008. The firm’s work addresses the intersection of architecture, storytelling, and society, examples of which can be found in many built and experimental projects. Recent and current projects include a 180-unit microhousing building in Boston, a Cohousing community in greater Boston, and large scale graphic work. Their work with uncommon housing typologies has led to their inclusion on numerous public panels to discuss the future of smaller living. In October of 2017, French 2D’s stage-set-like installation Place/Setting will house a series of public dinner parties on Boston City Hall Plaza, during art, science, and technology festival, HUBweek. Each meal will focus on a theme surrounding Boston’s growing income disparity, with the aim to encourage civic engagement and understanding through dialogue.
In 2013 French 2D was one of five finalists in the MoMA PS1 Young Architects Program. French 2D’s work has been published in Arch Daily, Architectural Record, and The New Museum’s New City Reader. Their work has been exhibited at the MoMA, Syracuse University School of Architecture, the Boston Society of Architects Space, and the US Pavilion of the 13th Venice Architecture Biennale.
Jenny French received a B.A. cum laude in Art History and Studio Art with honors from Dartmouth College, and a Master of Architecture from the Harvard GSD. She is a recipient of Harvard's Julia A. Appleton Traveling Fellowship and has been a visiting artist at the American Academy in Rome. French previously worked at SHoP Architects, where she co-edited the firm’s monograph Out of Practice. She also served as co-editor of GSD Platform 3. French has taught at Northeastern University, Tufts University, the Boston Architectural College, and served as a thesis advisor at RISD. Her design research on site visits to unbuilt architecture has been exhibited at the Harvard GSD and is included in the Cornell Journal of Architecture, Issue 10: Spirits.
