Symposium “On Atmospheres” to explore role of atmosphere, atmospherics in design

Kicking off with a Thursday, February 4 keynote address by landscape architect Günther Vogt, the symposium “On Atmospheres: Spaces of Embodiment” will bring together a range of internationally prominent scholars and practitioners to reflect upon the effects and conditions of atmosphere, sensory well-being, and embodiment in the contemporary city.

The symposium has been organized by Silvia Benedito (MAUD ’04), assistant professor of landscape architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, with the support of the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs, the Harvard University Committee on the Arts (HUCA), the Rouse Visiting Artist Program, and the Daniel Urban Kiley Fund at the GSD.

A series of GSD faculty will moderate the three sessions scheduled on Friday, February 5, which will contextualize atmosphere in three manners: as matter, as condition, and as affect. The symposium concludes with a roundtable discussion and reception on Friday evening.

An accompanying installation titled “Pneuma(tic) Bodies,” a collaborative project by Benedito, Alexander Häusler (MArch ’04), and Harvard’s director of dance Jill Johnson, will be on view at Harvard’s Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts (CCVA) from February 3 to 21. The installation will be introduced with a performance and discussion will take place on February 3 at 6:00 p.m. at the CCVA.
