From urban design to community development to civic leadership to education, with a stop at the Loeb Fellowship, Maurice Cox (LF 2005) has taken an unusual path to his role as architectural educator. Design Robotics Group featured in reports from Smartgeometry 2012

The Design Robotics Group has been prominently featured in the reports from Smartgeometry 2012 at RPI in Troy, New York. The group was selected to lead a cluster on Ceramics 2.0, an outgrowth of research in the course Material Processes and Systems: CeramicsLAB.  The theme of this year's conference was "Material Intensities -Simulation, Energy, Environment," and its first day was structured in clusters to promote collaborative work across multiple disciplines, rather than one-directional information. Ceramics 2.0 was one of the "material research" clusters, creating custom bricks with a robot.

Zofnass and the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure launch Envision framework

The Zofnass Program for Sustainable Infrastructure and the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI) have launched Envision, a framework for evaluating infrastructure projects. The system takes what ISI calls a holistic view, touching on quality of life, resource allocation, impacts on ecosystems and climate, and issues of risk and leadership. Project owners and design teams can use a self-assessment tool or can submit the project for third-party verification, which includes evaluation of the project during three phases: pre-construction, construction, and operations and maintenance. Future versions of the rating system will also incorporate additional tools for complex or multi-stage projects.

Alumni Seung Teak Lee (MArch '09) and Mi Jung Lim (MArch '09) are STPMJ and were announced today as recipients of the Architectural League Prize for Young Architects + Designers. The Prize is one of North America’s most prestigious awards for young architects.

Mitchell Joachim, founder of Terreform, was featured in the May issue of Dwell Magazine for the Now 99- Today's Design Landscape: Ideas, People, Products & Plans. An interview with Diana Budds explores Joachim's designs for biologically based architecture as the future of housing. The published interview follows.

Cao | Perrot Studio’s Cloud Terrace opens at Dumbarton Oaks

Cloud Terrace, a new temporary installation by landscape artists Andy Cao (LF '11) and Xavier Perrot, recently opened at Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, D.C. Clouds sculpted from chicken wire dangle 10,000 loaned Swarovski crystals creating the effect of gathered raindrops over the property's Arbor Terrace. John Beardsley, Adjunct Professor of Landscape Architecture at the GSD and Director of Landscape Studies at Dumbarton Oaks, says temporary installations “breathe new life into these landscapes,” which are “living works” no matter how historic. The commission developed from Cao's visit to the institute as a Loeb fellow in 2011.

Professor Kiel Moe awarded MacDowell Colony Fellowship

Professor Kiel Moe has been awarded a MacDowell Colony Fellowship for Summer 2012. Founded in 1907, the MacDowell Colony is the nation’s leading artist colony. The Colony nurtures the arts by offering creative individuals of the highest talent an inspiring environment in which they can produce enduring works of the imagination.

Memorial by Krzysztof Wodiczko and Julian Bonder (MDes ’96) unveiled in Nantes, France

Professor in Residence in Art, Design, and the Public Domain Krzysztof Wodiczko, in collaboration with Julian Bonder (MDesS '96), has recently completed construction of the Memorial to the Abolition of Slavery in Nantes, France.
